When the .NET gTLD was first set up in 1985, along with the first domain extensions on the Internet, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure establishments. Considering that there were no specific regulations about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were secured and used for diverse purposes and by scores of people. This domain extension is a good substitute of .COM, particularly if the necessary domain with the latter extension is not free for registration.
